Not Average

So the first thing I’ve learned about trying to have a baby is that you’ve got to track your temperature so that you know when you’ve ovulated, and can thus predicted the time you’re most likely to conceive. I know that you don’t actually have to track your temperature to conceive, but the idea of creating a graph of my temperature and likely fertility seriously appeals to the geek in me. More than I would have expected.

So of course, I promptly went out and bought myself a basal body temperature thermometer. I expected something fancy and expensive when I went to the store, but it turns out a BBT thermometer is just like any other, except it adds an extra digit, so that you can determine your temperature down to the 10th of a degree. To use it, you’ve got to check your temperature as soon as you wake up in the morning, before you get out of the bed or do anything, because doing anything will raise your temperature enough that you won’t get any useful data. You’re also supposed to check your temperature at the same time everyday, which is where I’m running in to problems. I don’t always wake up at the same time. For example, weekends, I try to make up for all my early work days by sleeping in late.

So my chart (at Fertility Friend) doesn’t look anything like the “ideal” chart. My temperature data is just some crazy jaggedy line, like I can’t decide if I’m hot or cold. I’m still early in this process, so I’m not certain what’s wrong with my chart, but there are a few possibilities: A) Not taking my temperature at the same time everyday is a real problem; B) Spending a night tossing and turning in bed screws up my temperature; C) Maybe this being my first month off the pill has my body confused; or D) I’m just not normal.

Regardless, I figure I’ll start with the easy problem and work on taking my temperature at the same time. In another month or so, I might know if that’s what was needed.  If you’ve already been through this, tell me, did it take you awhile to get a “normal” chart, or do you think you know why my data is so messy?
